Many thanks for thinking about volunteering with us.
We want volunteering to be fun and rewarding – if you are at all concerned about trying a role please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Benefits of Volunteering
1) Each volunteer receives a UKCC Volunteer Team t-shirt and lanyard so that they are visible to parents and competitors.
2) Access for them and their children to the Event Control room – which provides some peace and quiet between rounds. We also ensure this room is stocked with food and drink throughout the day.
3) Free lunch
4) The chance to be part of a fun and effective team and help organize some of the biggest and best junior chess tournaments in the world!
Event volunteering – roles
There are various roles at our events. In practice volunteers often perform many of the following functions throughout the day.
Section controllers look after a particular section (such as under 7s for example). Your role is to help handle any disputes and queries which the players might have (often trivial issues) and to ensure the results of the games are recording correctly and handed back to the arbiting team. Knowledge of chess rules is a pre-requisite but you don’t need to be a strong player! Training and guidance will be provided and you will be supported by the arbiters on the day.
Welcome Team members help welcome parents and children when they arrive and give brief instructions on what to do (for example where to see the pairings, where the waiting areas are etc). This is an important role as many parents are new to chess events. A friendly and helpful nature is all that is required in this role.
Event coordinators assist throughout the day ensuring that everything outside of the playing hall is running smoothly. This includes ensuring corridors and gangways are kept clear and that any incidents are reported to the Event Director.
