Keep Your Brains Active This Summer

Following last year’s popular camp we are pleased to announce the 2021 UK Chess Challenge Summer Virtual Camp

The Chess Summer Camp runs from Monday 26th July through to Sunday 29th August from 10am to 2pm every weekday (with competitions at weekend as well).

Our chess sessions are led by our Managing Director and former British Ladies Champion Sarah Longson and our team of professional chess coaches. They include interactive video sessions and activities designed to be fun and educational. Our tougher sessions will provide a real challenge to international players whilst we also offer sessions tailored to beginner and novice players.

How Does It Work?

Each week you will be sent a schedule of what is taking place when – and how to join! There are various sessions throughout the week with different activities. Whilst everyone will get something from every session some are pitched at particular experience levels – this will be indicated on the calendar.

You may attend as many or as few sessions as you choose. Don’t worry if you miss certain sessions – each session is independent and you can join right in with the next one. We can provide recordings and materials from any session you miss and want to recap.

Sessions begin from 10am on weekdays and are held on Zoom (video conference software) and/or lichess.org – our partner chess platform. There will be an ‘on-boarding’ session for those unfamiliar with the software and those who are a bit more apprehensive about online chess. You will be in good hands!

There are several types of sessions:

  • Coaching – interactive lesson on a chess theme delivered by a professional chess teacher
  • Chess workouts – fully interactive practise session working on a particular skill
  • Games – fun and friendly games to keep the kids engaged whilst practicing their skills
  • Competitions – tournaments in various formats

All sessions are designed to be as immersive as possible whilst ensuring everyone has fun and gains confidence by steadily making improvements at their level. Our games and competitions include a mix of standard play swiss, blitz, rapid, variants (such as king of the hill, crazyhouse…), team battles and simuls versus a coach. We will keep the supervised zoom room open for players who want to continue the banter during play.
